The Golden Gate and Berkeley

A short trip to Berkeley with Seb, when he was visiting us; it was the 5/15/99 and a sunny day !

A panoramic view of the University of Berkey (made up from 4 merged photos).
We are located at the top of the university tower ; the university itseld is composed of several buildings melted in the middle of this nice eucalyptus trees. The campus is located at the foot hill, and it clims somehow.
Beside the poor quality of the image, the Golden Gate can be distinguished in the middle background. San Francisco is located at the left.

Still from the top of the tower, a view of the other part of the university. The building are quite differents but still surrounded by these great sequioas and eucalyptus trees.
There a lot of students who ride around in bycicles, it looks pretty enjoyable.
As unseen, there are more buildings hidden in the background hills.

Toujours depuis le haut de la tour, une vue sur l'autre partie de l'université. Les batîments sont assez hétérogenes et sont noyés dans une forêt de sequioas et d'eucalyptus.
Il y a pas mal d'étudiants qui se balladent à vélo, c'est assez agréable.
Contrairement aux apparences, d'autres batîments de Berkeley se cachent parmis la verdure des collines en arrière plan.

Another view of the bay, this time taken from the top of the hill as seen on the previous image.
In the foreground is located the Hall of Science, at the second level comes Berkeley and the University. In the background, merged into the typical fog are located the Golden Gate, San Francisco and the Bay Bridge, where we came from.

Une autre vue de la baie, cette fois-ci prise depuis le haut de la colline de l'image précédente. La vue est imprenable.
Au premier plan se trouve le Hall of Science, au second plan se trouve Berkeley et son université. Au fond tapis dans le léger fog de l'après midi se trouvent de droite à gauche le Golden Gate, San Francisco et à droite le Bay Bridge, par où nous sommes venus.
Pour repartir, nous redescendrons en bas et contournerons la baie par la droite (le nord).

Toujours perchés sur notre colline, un gros plan sur le Golden Gate où nous irons tout à l'heure.

Uphill is located the Hall of Mathematics.
It is quiet it's amazing ; we only saw two studients reading their math curses in a sunny patio. There's a blackboard full of math equations on a wall! I was too polite to take a photo of them, and beside you wouldn't have heard the tamtam that the guy was playing while studying :-)
Apparently this was not threat for this doe that was quietly standing in the nearside meadow.
I wish I could have been in a so relaxing environment during my university scholarship!

En haut de la colline se trouve le centre des mathématiques
C'est d'un calme impressionnant ; on y trouve juste deux étudiants en trains de réviser leur cours de math au soleil sur une terrase devant un tableau vert rempli d'équations -- par politesse je ne les ai pas pris en photo et de toute facon on n'aurait pas entendu le tamtam que jouait l'un des etudiants pendant qu'il relisait son cours :-)
Visiblement cela ne dérangeait pas cette biche qui se trouvait à 5 métres de là dans le prés avoisinant. Plutot sympa et détressant comme cadre universitaire !

Oh the nice Golden Gate !
The weather was amazingly clear, and it was a real pleasure to take this photo. This vista point is located on the hill at the brige north. It's really an impressive and amazing structure, I had this funny feeling that I could almost touch it...
Notice that Seb is taking the pose, apparently not aware of the tremendous wind that blows over this area.

Oh un Golden Gate !
Le temps était vraiment magnifique, et la vue un véritable plaisir à photographier ! Ce promontoire est situé sur la colline au nord du pont. C'est vraiment une structure épatante et colossale, j'avais presque l'impression que je pouvais le toucher...
On remarquera que Seb fait la pose, ignorant apparamment les rafales de vents qui soufflent sur cet endroit très dégagé.

Another spot on the hill, a bit farther.
Gives a very cool view of the core of San Francisco. Notice the usual fog that blurs the mountains at the horizon.

Un autre point de vue un peu plus loin sur la colline.
En prime, on gagne une superbe vue du coeur de San Francisco. Remarquez la légére brume habituelle qui masque les montagnes à l'horizon.

This panoramic view, yet not technically perfect, is just awesome. It's clear that this impressive view completly justified the trip!

Anyway, that reminds me I'll need to get back there one morning (huh!) to get a picture of the bridge out of the sea fog.

Also notice that the beach you see at the very right of the image is Baker Beach. It's a beautiful place but also a tremendously windy one!
During WWII, Baker Beach was a fortified place, protected by two 12-inch "disappearing" guns. As one of the guns is still present, I'll need to get back some sunny day to picture this. Voici un montage panoramique un poil sommaire mais quand même assez somptueux. Il est clair que cette simple vue justifiait amplement le détour !

Hmmm, ca me fait penser qu'il faudrait que j'y retourne un matin (argh!) pour photographier le pont émergeant de la brume...

A noter également que la plage que l'on apercoit complétement à droite est Baker Beach. Un endroit terrible mais aussi particulièrement venteux !
Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, Baker Beach était un fort protégé par une batterie de "disappearing guns". L'un des canons est encore présent, ce qui me donnera l'occasion d'y retourner par un temps ensoleillé.(Suivez ce lien pour plus d'info sur le role de Baker Beach durant la guerre, et cet autre lien expliquant le fonctionnement du "disappearing gun").
