"""Is she able to understand the nets public-ness? by UnFair 2008-03-02 05:25:24

If someone is aware that everything you ever put on the net is not only accessible by almost everybody, but also stays permanent this someone will be very reluctant giving out any information. It is similar to tattooing personal information right into your own face. Whoever meets you and can read will know these things that you tattoed there.

I am personally not too much worried about what an 11 year old girl might see on the net, but much so by whom she might be "seen". Abuse on the net needs information as a point of action - she must not give out that information. If she has secrets then she needs to keep them secret, not publish them by blaring them out on the net.

You should not read her diary. But everything she gives out on the net is fair game for you to observe and control, since it could as well be done by someone else. (Just a week ago I kind of shocked my mother by the amount of information about her everyone can google by just using her full name. She is a candidate for the town council so it was a lot of press information but also some more privat stuff - more than enough to make a shockingly accurate profile.)

Maybe it is a good idea to show her how much information is out there about you and your little mischiefs. (If there is any, I don't know how information-aware you are and were in the last decade :-) Alternately try to find someone else like one of her teachers as a research target.)"""

That seems like a reasonable way to teach: understand the consequences so that the actions can be controlled, and then propose to help.

Filtering at home is not the solution, since net access can happen in any number of public places.

As for the Landmark Forum, I won't make any personal judgment here. I think it's good to have these pro/cons arguments available on the net as it may help one to get a better perspective about what they may be about. Eventually it's all in the eye of the beholder: what are the benefits that you are actually looking for and compare to what you may get.

More random stuff here if you're not already bored.

This is interesting too, for very different reasons:

Many interesting comments here. As for myself, I don't think I've wasted time in high school, and even less in college. I learnt Pascal on my own when Basic was barely on the program, then learnt Objective Pascal and later C when the official courses aborded Pascal. Well at least when forced me to discover Lisp and Prolog and although that didn't catch on me it was interesting to see something less procedural.
